From Saint-Jean-Cap Ferrat on the French Riviera to Twelve Peaks in Hong Kong, and from East Hampton, New York and Knightsbridge in London to Avenue d’Ostende in Monte Carlo, these represent just some of the most select residential areas and streets in the world.
Marbella also has its own addresses of distinction and they are found in a limited collection of exclusive gated communities. One only has to mention their names and the majority of those who know Marbella are immediately aware of the significance. These residential complexes have been built with only the best in mind: unrivalled views of the Mediterranean coupled with vistas of Morocco and Gibraltar, as well as of the mountainous landscape that is the awe-inspiring backdrop to the coast.
They have been located to bring the resident close to various golf courses, or to the beach; whichever is preferred. And all provide that all-important privacy and seclusion the discerning buyer requires, enhanced by the natural beauty of forests, flora and fauna that surround them in a luxuriant embrace.
These luxury property addresses offer a variety of lifestyles: from beach living to first-line golf, to countryside residences and plots where the buyer can make their own mark, as well as a range of architectural styles that encompass the traditional and contemporary.
La Zagaleta is the byword for luxury living across Spain and much farther afield. Indeed, it is widely recognised as one of the most exclusive country clubs in Europe. The quality and magnificence of its residences, combined with the highest level of security and top drawer service and amenities, attracts international celebrities, businesspeople and those who wish to combine the very highest levels of elegance and luxury with peace and privacy.
Set in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja Mountains, La Zagaleta looks out over a stunning expanse of coastal Marbella all the way to Gibraltar and North Africa. Framed by mountain scenery and set within a 900-hectare protected nature reserve, with forests, streams and wild animals, it is a world in itself. From its two private golf courses, equestrian centre and tennis club to its residents-only club house, no detail needed for the ultimate in comfort has been overlooked. The club house is the social hub of the community here and with its 5000m2 indoor space it offers an endless array of amenities for the exclusive use of residents and their guests, and includes a restaurant serving everything from traditional Mediterranean cuisine to Asian fare. And there is another club house beside the New Course that serves bistro snacks.
The properties at La Zagaleta are exclusively villas; all set in large plots that ensure each owner has space, privacy and uninterrupted views. The villas are widely regarded as the very best in Marbella and typically include features such as private spas, gyms, wine cellars, home cinemas, entertainment rooms and occasionally a helipad. In terms of architectural styles, the options range from classical mansion to modern Andalucian and the best in contemporary design.
Sitting 400 metres above sea level, El Madroñal is an oasis of privacy, security, serenity and calm. Yet it is only a short distance from the fashionable resort of Marbella and the opulence of Puerto Banús. The lights twinkle below as residents enjoy a starlit night on the terraces of refined homes surrounded by luxuriant cork and pine forests where wildlife roams freely, although never on your property, and where rare eagles may be spied through binoculars.
The sweeping views from this elite neighbourhood are exceptional, taking in golf courses, the Mediterranean and the African coast. It has been, and still is, home to celebrities, politicians and aristocrats, as well as business tycoons, and it is easy to see why.
A 10-minute drive from here and residents are at Blue Flag beaches, Michelin-starred restaurants, gyms, sports clubs and an enviable nightlife. And, with a selection of highly ranked international schools on its doorstep as well, El Madroñal has also become a favoured choice with families.
The private villas in El Madroñal are of an exceptional standard with high quality finishes and immaculately landscaped tropical gardens featuring private pools and more. There is a range of architectural styles available as well as plot sizes, and each home is unique in this mountainside sanctuary.
In the relatively short time since its establishment, Sierra Blanca quickly became a sought after address. Located in the hills above Marbella’s Golden Mile, with which it shares a postcode, it is bounded to the north by the ten hectare Parque de Nagüeles, offering ample opportunities for hiking trails through the countryside where the mountain goat, fox, mountain cat, mongoose, and eagles, falcons, owls and partridge share their habitat with humans.
Perched above the coast, this enclave ensures privacy and tranquility, as well as first-rate security, which has always been a key ingredient of Sierra Blanca’s appeal. It is also only minutes away from central Marbella, Puerto Banús and all the varied amenities of the Golden Mile, including the Puente Romano and Marbella Club resorts and adjacent beaches. In addition, the proximity to shops, restaurants, international schools and leisure and sports facilities, as well as activities such as golf, tennis, horse riding, fishing and more make it the perfect location for those seeking a home that is secluded yet also only a moment away from the things that add spice to life.
Plus, in the summer, the nearby La Cantera (The Quarry) hosts the Starlite Festival, where Spanish and international artists such as Sting, Elton John and Andrea Bocelli perform in this spectacular open-air amphitheatre.
Furthermore, the enclaves of Nagüeles and Cascada de Camoján both fall within the environs of Sierra Blanca, extending the property options, with Cascada de Camoján being one of the most admired developments of recent years.
The properties in this residential estate are unequivocally luxurious, with the emphasis on quality, exclusivity and privacy. Furthermore, in addition to the high standards and well thought out infrastructure of Sierra Blanca, there is a choice of apartments, townhouses and villas here, something which cannot be said of every address of distinction in Marbella.
Located in the foothills of La Concha Mountain, Cascada de Camoján is a private, gated estate offering a privileged lifestyle. Its 24-hour private guard patrols and well-secured perimeter has been a key selling point for its HNWI residents. The surrounding pine forests and the magnificent sea and mountain views from its elevated position complete the estate and contribute to an overall environment that provides a much-prized blend of natural beauty with human design.
Like Sierra Blanca, it is only minutes away from the sophistication of Marbella, as well as beaches, healthcare facilities, international schools, shops and a host of sport and leisure activities.
The properties that form the majority of this estate are spacious, private villas: some are palatial in size, often with sweeping, tree-lined driveways and architecture of the grandest design and all enjoying the benefit of large plots, allowing extensive space for gardens and pools. As is to be expected these homes are built to the highest standards with the use of premium materials, excellent finishing and all the latest features demanded by the modern, international homeowner. However, there are a small number of exclusive apartment complexes in the contemporary style, as well as a stylish condominium-style complex with spectacular sea views.
La Quinta has the distinction of not only being a prestigious residential area, but also creating a peaceful zone between the city and the country. La Quinta’s winding roads and its almost hidden lanes where superior villas are secreted behind green screens of trees always leave the visitor with the impression that there is much more to La Quinta then the passerby will ever discover.
And yet, for all its aura of seclusion, it is only minutes away from the entertainments and amenities of Marbella, Nueva Andalucia and San Pedro de Alcántara, which is what makes this estate built on gently undulating hills so appealing.
La Quinta has another ace up its sleeve: sitting at the heart of it is the five star La Quinta Golf Resort & Spa Hotel. Not only does it offer one of the finest golf courses on the coast and a luxury Spa, the resort is also a social hub for La Quinta residents, complete with fine dining restaurants and bars.
The properties in La Quinta are diverse and the area contains a number of smaller boutique developments and gated communities within the greater La Quinta area offering luxury apartments and townhouses, while other areas of La Quinta are the location of private villas in the grand style, sitting in spacious plots with designer gardens and stunning swimming pools. Due to its elevated position, the views from La Quinta are panoramic and take in the full sweep from mountains to sea and across to another continent.
It is true to say that Puerto Banús attracts people in the same way that a brightly coloured flower draws bees to sip its nectar. The once small fishing port is now one of the most upmarket marinas in Spain and while it has developed a star-studded history, it retains much of its original Andalusian village character.
It is famous for the super yachts in its marina, for its party lifestyle and its boutiques stocking famous brands straight from the pages of Vogue, such as Gucci, Tom Ford, Versace, Jimmy Choo, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton. There is also the added attraction of the daily promenade of supercars along the Port’s frontline, which can only be accessed by drivers with a private Port pass.
But this glamour does not capture all that Puerto Banús is: it is also a community offering the perfect location for those who want a whole range of amenities within easy reach, as well as a seaside lifestyle. Banús residents can be at the casino one night, and at a charming beach chiringuito the next day. They can shop at the supermarket in El Corte Inglés, or at supermarkets in Nueva Andalucia, Marbella or San Pedro, because it is very fortunately located almost equidistant from all these places.
Property in Puerto Banús ranges from the apartment complexes of exceptional quality and space surrounded by landscaped gardens, some with direct beach access and all offering five-star facilities, including in many cases such features as gyms, saunas, Jacuzzis, Turkish baths, concierge services and private security.
There are also a number of beachside villas, including those that more correctly should be called mansions and have expansive plots and unequalled sea views. And, for many, the fact that many of these can also claim a prestigious Golden Mile address is another main attraction.
Perched on an incline to the north of Puerto Banús, and within walking distance of the marina, Nueva Andalucia is the home of ‘Golf Valley’, making it a hot spot for avid golfers. Its wide avenues are leafy green and manages to combine a sense of ‘town and country’, thanks to the number of peaceful areas juxtaposed with vibrant hubs of entertainment, especially dining, as Nueva Andalucia is one of the most prominent areas for new restaurant launches that sit alongside those who have remained landmarks for decades.
It is an area favoured by families due to its proximity to several international schools as well as sport and leisure activities for all ages. It also offers everything you need for daily life, including supermarkets, clinics, dentists and salons, as well as the famous Saturday market where you can buy anything from antiques to fresh vegetables.
The property selection here ranges from mansions to private villas and a diverse array of apartments in traditional and contemporary styles.
This is undoubtedly one of Marbella’s most glamorous locations. This five metre stretch of real estate starts at Rio Verde to the east of Puerto Banús and ends at Plaza Bocanegra in the west end of Marbella. It has been an address of distinction since the opening of the Marbella Club Hotel and the building of the Mar Mar and Al Riyad palaces by the Saudi royal family, which can be seen from the road.
More recently, the expansion of the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa, with its numerous restaurants, the new Nobu Hotel, its tennis courts that host the Senior Masters tournament, as well as its Six Senses Spa, has generated interest from a new generation of buyers who wish to reside at this much-coveted address.
The area has a significant number of mature properties, ranging from grand mansions to beautifully appointed apartments, all of which offer a secluded, safe and private lifestyle. Furthermore, residents have a choice of beachside living or the tranquillity of plots hidden away on the foothills north of the N340 road that runs along the coast. The Golden Mile exemplifies quality in all things, from its lifestyle to its living spaces – few can resist it.
Marbella East is a green oasis of forestation that runs from elevated estates such as La Mairena (Elviria) down to vast beachside villas and apartments in Los Monteros, Rio Real, Las Chapas and Cabopino.
Not only is the property in this area outstanding, the beaches are breathtaking, which is why it attracts those looking for a long golden strand of silky sand, plus some of the most exclusive beach clubs in Marbella, such as la Cabane at the Los Monteros Hotel. Nearby Nikki Beach is hidden from the road by the extensive cork and pine forests that are an integral part of Marbella East and contribute so much to it ambiance of quiet and sophisticated relaxation. Cabopino is renowned for its beach, but it also has a small gem of a marina that is being expanded to allow larger yachts to use the moorings, and its harbour is lined with some wonderful restaurants.
While there are many large, luxury villas, there are also a number of beachside apartment complexes, and as it is only a 30-minute drive to Málaga airport, it has quickly become a favourite spot with the frequent flyer.
Guadalmina lies at the extreme west of Marbella and forms a border with neighbouring Estepona. Straddling both sides of the N340, it is home to Guadalmina Golf Club, one of the most popular golf courses with residents old and new. The club house is on the north side of the road, known as Guadalmina Alta, while part of the course continues south of the road in Guadalmina Baja., which is where beachside living happens. Guadalmina Alta also has a buzzing commercial centre with supermarkets, an assortment of boutiques and attractive restaurants, with one of them being so legendary that people come from far and wide to eat at the Restaurante Asador .
Guadalmina has the advantage of being minutes away from the town of San Pedro. Indeed, in the past they were seen as two distinct places, but they now seem to have grown into each other, which is beneficial to both.
Properties in both Guadalmina Alta and Baja consist of spacious private villas, superior townhouses and apartment complexes. The area has managed to successfully blend the more traditional styles with the contemporary architecture of recent years to create diversity and harmony in an area that offers a great lifestyle and easy access to all amenities.
