Big Ben Awards sponsors Big Ben Award 2018-2019 is proud to be a main sponsor of the Big Ben Award (BBA) 2018 and the presentation ceremony on 24th January this year. It is also, most significantly, the tenth anniversary of these prestigious awards that recognise excellence in the Chinese community worldwide, as well as contributions made by those who are not of Chinese origin.

The Big Ben Award 2018 will be held at the Palace of Westminster Pavilion Terrace, and is to be hosted by Robert Courts MP. Special Guests included The Right Honourable Mark Field MP, Minister of State for Asia and Pacific, actress Kiera Chaplin, founder of The Charlie Chaplin Award Asia and BBC World Correspondent Leisha Santorelli.

Established in 2008 by professor Yinya Jonsson Li and others, the Big Ben Award and its global coordinator, the British Chinese Youth Federation, endeavours to establish and promote high achievers and brands around the world. The Committee looks for established models of excellence in various fields, such as technology, economy, education, culture, medicine and sports, as well as others.

The BBA aims to reward outstanding achievements in work and society that are also combined with a strong sense of social responsibility. As well as the awards, the BBA hosts charity events to support young families facing problems and young people with disabilities.

Shortlisted candidates for the 2018 Big Ben Awards include, Lang Lang, Justin Bieber, Kelly Wang, Leo Appel, Yuzuru Hanyu, Negin Khapalwak, Diana Wang, Kangyang Steven Zhang and Rupert Hoogewerf, who have been shortlisted for the Global Outstanding Young Persons Award.

Justin Bieber is globally famous as a singer, and fans of classical music may also be aware of Lang Lang, a virtuoso on the piano. Kelly Wang is an art promoter who joins the list due to her insightful vision and her active promotion of cultural exchanges between China and other countries, while Rupert Hoogwerf is the founder of the “Hurn China Rich List.” Negin Khpalwak is a female conductor leading the Zohra – the first all-female orchestra from Afghanistan, and from the sports world, Kangyang Steven Zhang is the board member of Inter Milan following a successful M&A between Italian and Chinese business tycoons.

Leo Appel leads the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, while Yuzuru Hanyu is the first two-time Olympic men’s figure skating champion from Asia. Some regard him as the greatest figure skater in history and he has broken world records twelve times. And Diana Wang is the first Chinese fashion designer to open a studio in Harrods, the world’s most famous department store. The BBA Committee has also announced that the Rt. Hon Mark Field MP and Sir George Iacobescu, chairman of the Canary Wharf Group have been added to the awards shortlist.

As you can see the shortlist consists of people who have excelled in their field as well as promoting good relations between China and the rest of the world.

Past winners of the award include Wendi Deng Murdoch, (Chinese-American movie producer) London-born violinist, Vanessa Mae, world snooker champion Marco Fu, Molly Samuel MBE, a Karate World Champion and Olympic Pingpong Champion Yaping Deng. They will be joined by a host of other distinguished BBA ward winners at the 10th Anniversary ceremony .
